Bancroft Contracting Corporation was selected to be the General Contractor for the rehabilitation of Casco Bay Lines’ Ferry Terminal located on Chebeague Island in the Casco Bay, facilitated by the State of Maine Department of Transportation. This project involved the removal and replacement of key structural support systems for the pier.
Several years of use had deteriorated structural components of Great Diamond Island’s ferry terminal. After major storms in Winter 2023, these weaknesses were made worse and the pier required a major overhaul that included:
Installation of (9) 50 ft.-long Pressure Treated Timber Piles
- These piles were set into place with a barge crane, driven into mud using a vibratory hammer, and finally driven to a design depth with a diesel pile driver.
Removal and Replacement of (2,500) BF of Pressure Treated 4×8 Heavy Timber Cross-Bracing
- This work involved careful planning around the tide cycle as several of the timbers were just above the low-water level.
Installation of New Electrical Service and Exterior Lighting Improvements
- Working with a local Electrical Subcontractor and Central Maine Power, Bancroft Contracting installed new light poles for the pier using timber piles.
Removal and Replacement of (4,000) SF of Pressure Treated 4×8 Deck Boards
- A large part of this project involved replacing the entire deck of the pier at Great Diamond Island. This work was done in segments.
During the construction process, crews encountered some environmental challenges. But, with careful planning and constant communication with the Engineer of Record, these challenges were worked through, and the work was completed. All while the Casco Bay Ferry traffic continued uninterrupted. With these repairs, the structural integrity of this pier has been improved significantly.
