Bancroft Contracting Corporation was selected to be the General Contractor for the rehabilitation of Casco Bay Lines’ Ferry Terminal located on Chebeague Island in the Casco Bay, facilitated by the State of Maine Department of Transportation. This project involved the removal and replacement of key structural support systems for the pier.
Several years of use and deterioration had weakened some of the structural components of Chebeague Island’s ferry terminal. After the major storm events in Winter 2023, these weaknesses were made worse and the pier required a major overhaul. Significant parts of this rehabilitation work included:
Installation of (16) 65 ft.-long Pressure Treated Timber Piles
- These piles were set into place, driven through the mudline using a vibratory hammer, and finally driven to a specified depth with a diesel pile driver.
Removal and Replacement of (2,600) BF of Pressure Treated Heavy Timbers
- Most of this work was located under the pier and relied heavily on taking advantage of the tides.
Removal and Replacement of (5) 50 ft.-long Greenheart Fender Piles.
- These timber piles, procured all the way from Guyana, are commonly used as a fender so that large watercraft can safely moor to a pier without causing damage.
Removal and Replacement of (6,400) SF of Pressure Treated 4×8 Deck Boards
- A significant portion of this project involved replacing the entire deck of the pier at Chebeague Island. This work was done in segments.
One of the largest challenges of this project was that this work has to be completed while the ferry terminal remained open to the public. Only through constant communication between Bancroft Contracting, the Maine DOT, and Casco Bay Lines, work continued seamlessly throughout the busy months of Summer 2025. All while constant pedestrian traffic and cargo shipments continued uninterrupted.
